Family businesses in French-speaking Switzerland under the microscope

25 Sept 2024

In partnership with Lombard Odier Bank, Bilan magazine and the School of Management Fribourg (HEG-FR) have published the results of a major survey of family businesses in French-speaking Switzerland, where the owner-managers are at least the second-generation of the family.

This extensive quantitative survey was carried out by HEG Fribourg in the summer of 2024 among SMEs in French-speaking Switzerland. It focused in particular on companies run and owned, for at least two generations, by the same family. Over 245 companies took part in this survey – the first of its kind in French-speaking Switzerland.

How do these companies manage to last for generations while remaining united as a family? What challenges and opportunities do these admirably long-lasting companies face? The results from over 200 companies have been analyzed and are presented in the form of a special report in the September 25, 2024 issue of “Bilan” magazine.

This survey is particularly relevant in Switzerland, where the majority of businesses are family-owned. This study focuses on the French-speaking cantons of Switzerland and provides an overview of the businesses located there. The results reveal a few secrets of family success, as well as key themes such as transmission, succession, the evolution of corporate culture, performance, and innovation.

This collaborative initiative, supported by global wealth and asset manager Lombard Odier, Bilan magazine, and the HEG-FR, is intended to be a long-term endeavor. The aim is for it to become a benchmark publication dedicated to family entrepreneurship and its specific features.
